PGT Window Replacement: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

PGT window replacement in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $340-$890 per opening installed, depending on whether you’re swapping a standard vinyl single-hung or an impact-rated aluminum unit with laminated glass. We stock PGT-compatible hardware, balances, and sash kits for same-day replacement on most Winguard and EnergyVue series, and we carry full frame-and-sash inventory for next-day complete unit swaps. Most Fort Lauderdale homeowners discover the problem when a window won’t stay open, won’t lock, or shows visible moisture between the panes after a storm season.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT has manufactured in Florida since 1980, and the product stack breaks into three tiers we see regularly in Fort Lauderdale homes built between 1995 and 2023. The Winguard aluminum and vinyl impact series carry Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance numbers (NOA) for HVHZ compliance; EnergyVue is the non-impact vinyl line common in interior rooms and second stories; and the older PremierVue aluminum line still appears in pre-2010 construction from Coral Ridge to Victoria Park.

To identify your exact unit, check the etched mark in the glass corner or the sticker on the frame jamb. You’ll need the series name, the nominal size (call-out dimension), and the NOA number if it’s impact-rated. The Winguard vinyl single-hung, for example, uses a 3/4-inch insulated laminated glass pack with a specific spacer profile; swapping in standard aftermarket IGUs voids the impact certification and usually fails inspection. We source OEM PGT glass packs or fabricate to the original NOA spec from our ES Windows and CWS partners when PGT lead times stretch.

Aftermarket balances and rollers exist for EnergyVue, but we don’t install them on Winguard impact units. The sash weight and wind-load rating require the factory-spec balance calibration; we’ve measured the difference in cycle testing, and the generic versions fail at roughly 40% of the OEM cycle count in salt-air conditions.

Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing

  • The sash drops or won’t stay open. This usually means the coil balance system has lost tension or the pivot bar has worn where it seats in the balance shoe. In Fort Lauderdale’s humidity, the galvanized balance springs corrode faster than inland specs predict; we replace them with stainless hardware.
  • Visible fog or moisture between glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed. On PGT units, this is almost always a spacer seal breach, not glass damage. The IGU is a replaceable component; you don’t need a full window unless the frame is compromised.
  • Lock won’t engage or feels loose. The keep striker has shifted or the multipoint lock mechanism has worn. On impact-rated units, this is a security issue, not just a convenience problem; the lock is part of the pressure rating system.
  • Frame corrosion or pitting at the sill. Salt air and pooled condensation attack aluminum frames, especially on east-facing units in Harbor Beach or Las Olas Isles. We see this accelerate where sprinklers hit the frame directly.
  • Air infiltration or water intrusion at the sash perimeter. The bulb seal or pile weatherstrip has compressed or torn. PGT uses a specific pile density; generic replacements don’t compress correctly and leak within two seasons.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Modern home exterior with sleek black-framed windows and brick facade
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Component / Service Typical Range (Fort Lauderdale)
IGU (insulated glass unit) replacement, standard vinyl $340-$520
IGU replacement, impact-rated laminated $580-$890
Sash kit (glass + frame replacement, existing main frame stays) $420-$680
Complete unit replacement, standard vinyl single-hung $680-$1,040
Complete unit replacement, Winguard impact aluminum $1,180-$1,840
Balance / hardware replacement only $180-$340

What drives the range: glass spec (standard vs. impact), frame material (vinyl vs. aluminum), access difficulty (first-floor slider vs. third-story casement), and whether the existing frame is square within 1/8 inch. Our measured survey documents all of this before we quote; the written price you receive is the invoice price. Haven Clause 1: the measurement and the quote are the same document. Every replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise and a documented photo record of the completed work.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground. You can check the etched glass mark, photograph the frame label, and verify whether the window is square in the opening with a tape measure (diagonal measurements within 1/8 inch). That information saves us time and you money.

Where DIY goes wrong: removing a PGT sash without understanding the balance tension can release a coil spring at force; laminated impact glass weighs roughly 2.5x standard glass and requires two people with proper suction cups; and an improperly seated IGU voids the NOA and your insurance discount. We don’t recommend homeowner glass handling on any unit over 40 pounds or above ground floor.

If you’re unsure which component has failed, call us at (754) 666-7478. We’ll walk through the symptoms by phone and schedule a measured survey if needed. The survey is free, and you keep the documentation.
